Short Semester Blues

Hi Guys......

The short semester is halfway through. How are you guys holding up? I hope you are doing the assignments and submitting them on time.

I know most of you are tired because of the workload and the short time to complete them in. But don't be too sad... Here are a few tricks to get over short semesters.

Use the library more. The library has an abundant of resources that you can tap on. For Example, instead of spending a lot of time looking for a book yourself, tell the librarian. The librarian can help you locate the book almost immediately.
Learn to use the catalogs in the libraries. Nowadays catalogs are done digitally, so it takes even less time to locate a book.
Study in groups. Believe it or not it speeds up studying time. Group members get to share their knowledge. Before you know it, you'll breeze through the materials.
Talk to your lecturers more often. They can guide you through difficult materials.

Try these out. They can help you. Drop by my office and talk to me. I will be more than glad to help you.

What to do if you cannot understand what you read in the textbook?

This is a major problem for many students who are not well verse in the language in which the book is written in. For example, if I can speak only a little Japanese, I would have a lot of problems if I were to try to read a textbook written in Japanese. So what can you do if you are having the same problem?

The things you can do are:

Use a good multilingual dictionary. In this blog, I have purposely included a link to a dictionary website. Try it now and find out how it works. Key in an English word that you don't know and find the meaning in Mandarin (or other languages)
Try to find the meaning that best fit the sentence or the paragraph.
Get a friend to help you.
Get the teacher to help you.
Read the sentence again to see if you understand the meaning of the word and if the sentence makes sense.

Learning a language is never easy. But if you can use it in your conversation, write in it and listen to it everyday, you will become very familiar with the language. This is when you find the ease in using the language.

The Old Crocodile

Deep in the jungle, there lived an old crocodile in a pond. The crocodile moved slowly as it could not see very well.

One day, after many days without food, the crocodile became very hungry. As it looked around for food, it saw a deer coming to the edge of the pond for a drink. “This deer would be a good meal for me…” the crocodile said to himself. Slowly the crocodile swam closer to the deer. Suddenly it pounced but missed! The deer avoided the crocodile and ran away. Sadly the crocodile returned to the middle of the pond. As the days go by it grew hungrier and hungrier. Then it had an idea…

Soon the hot season arrived and the water in the pond began to dry up. The pond grew smaller. After a while the animals need to go further into the middle of the pond just to drink. The crocodile knew this and waited patiently.

A group of goat came to the pond for a drink. As soon as one goat put its head down to drink, the crocodile rushed forward. It caught the goat with its huge jaws and pulled it into the pond. The goat drowned immediately and the crocodile ate it to the heart's content.
